This rock-hewn church lies a short distance from the road some 20 km NW of Lalibela. It was carved out of a dome of rock and is surrounded by a narrow trench between the church and the remaining rock, similar in many ways to the church of Gännätä Maryam. The architectural resemblance continues in the interior, which appears to have been covered originally with wall paintings similar to those of Gännätä Maryam, although many have since disappeared. The church is surrounded by a grove of trees, under which the local community holds meetings.
